To eat them you can either use your thumbnails to pry open the hairy skin or squeeze the rambutan until the skin at the seam splits open. Or simply grab a knife, slice the skin, and pry it open easily!
The name comes from the Malay word for hair: rambut. Since it can be found in much of Asia it has many names, like សាវម៉ាវ (pronounced sau-mauv) in Cambodia and chôm chôm (pronounced chum-chum) in Vietnam.
